Middle-aged people with high levels of the beneficial omega-3 fat DHA in their blood did significantly better on memory and reasoning tests in a 2010 study published by The Journal of Nutrition. The most common food sources you can use to boost your DHA is oily fish like salmon and mackerel.
The Journal of Clinical Investigation published a small but fascinating study in 2009 that showed the stark differences between those who consume a lot of fructose (found as a sweetener in most beverages and processed foods) and those who consume glucose found in vegetables. The main finding is that eating and drinking too much fructose makes you dangerously fat.
Emerging science indicates that infant brain development is negatively affected by exposure to bisphenol A, or BPA, a chemical widely used in plastic food containers, in the plastic lining of metal food cans, and even in the paper used for cash register receipts. Europe and Canada have already banned BPA for use in making baby bottles. In the U.S., the FDA is expected to rule by March 31, 2012, on a petition by the Natural Resources Defense Council to ban BPA from all food containers.
